Incorporating TED into lessonsTED talks can serve as a great basis for your lesson planning, particularly when focusing on listening skills. With an extensive range of topics, speakers and levels, the lesson possibilities are vast. You can use a TED talk around which to design your own activities, or use the TEDEd site to make formatted lesson plans with ease. Both methods can be found in the Learner Activities section of this site.

Lesson Plan |
Click here for my lesson plan using a TED talk and activities that I created to complete in class around this. You will see that in the homework section I ask the students to find their own TED talk, but you could replace this with your own TEDEd lesson (similar to those featured in the Learner Activities section), which can be reviewed outside the classroom, then be expanded on in your next class. Further resources featured in this lesson plan can be found at the bottom of this page.

Learner Aims |
The main aims for this lesson are for intermediate learners to practice listening for both gist and detail whilst practicing listening to authentic speech. TED talks demonstrate this authenticity, and the transcript allows a back-up for your learners should they need it. They also cover interesting, real-life topics, which encourage speaking practice and opinion sharing within the class. The homework section encourages learner autonomy and allows them to personalise their learning with a topic of their choosing.
